Marc Fogel is an American school teacher who was detained in Russia in August 2021 for attempting to enter the country with approximately 0.6 ounces (17 grams) of medical marijuana prescribed for a spinal condition. In June 2022, he was sentenced to 14 years in a high-security Russian prison camp.
On February 11, 2025, after more than three years of imprisonment, Fogel was released following negotiations led by U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff. His release was part of an exchange with Russia, though specific details of the exchange have not been disclosed.

Upon his return to the United States, Fogel was welcomed at the White House by President Donald Trump, who described the release as a potential step toward improving U.S.-Russia relations and advancing peace negotiations concerning the Ukraine conflict.
Fogel’s family expressed profound gratitude for his release, stating, “We are beyond grateful, relieved, and overwhelmed that after more than three years of detention, our father, husband, and son, Marc Fogel, is finally coming home.”
This development has been interpreted by some officials as a sign of potential diplomatic progress between the United States and Russia. National Security Adviser Mike Waltz noted that Fogel’s release could be an important element in peace negotiations, though specific details remain undisclosed.
