Andrew John Gwynne (born 4 June 1974) is a British politician who is Member of Parliament (MP) for Gorton and Denton, previously Denton and Reddish, since 2005. He was the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Public Health and Prevention from 2024 until February 2025, when he was dismissed and had his Labour membership suspended because of offensive messages he had written

In July 2024, he became Parliamentary Under-Secretary for Public Health. The comments were racist, sexist, and antisemitic.

Gwynne later apologized, calling them “badly misjudged comments.” He expressed regret and accepted the party’s decision.

  • Early Years (2005–2010)

Elected in 2005, Gwynne represented Denton and Reddish. He focused on transport, health, and local government.

  • Labour Opposition (2010–2017)

After Labour lost power, he took key opposition roles. He worked on health and community policies. In 2015, he became Shadow Public Health Minister. Later, he served as Labour’s Co-National Campaign Coordinator.

In 2017, he became Shadow Secretary for Communities and Local Government. He prioritized council funding, housing, and public services. He played a major role in Labour’s election strategy.

  • Recent Role and Controversy (2024–2025)

In 2024, he won the Gorton and Denton seat. He became a health minister.

At the age of 21, Gwynne became England’s youngest councillor when on 2 May 1996 he was elected to Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council[citation needed], representing the Denton West Ward for the Labour Party. He was re-elected in 2000 and 2004[citation needed] when he topped the poll in an “all out” election resulting from boundary changes in the borough. From 1998 to 2001 he chaired the Denton and Audenshaw District Assembly, and during 2003–04 he chaired the Resources and Community Services Scrutiny Panel[citation needed].
